Pierwszy mój odbiór "Smoka i Jerzego" był zdecydowanie negatywny. Do tej pory nie mogę się oprzeć wrażeniu, że pierwsza powieść jest najsłabsza w całym cyklu. To, co mnie zraziło najbardziej, to niepoważne traktowanie "fantastyczności" opisywanego świata, bądź co bądź, fantastycznego. Nazywanie poziomu Maga literkami, w stylu C, B+ czy AAA+ to w mojej opinii coś zdecydowanie żałosnego. Jeśli jednak potraktować podobne "elementy świata" jako swoisty rodzaj dowcipu, można dostrzec też liczne zalety powieści, które, po przeczytaniu wszystkich części, uznałem jednak za naprawdę udane dzieła. Przede wszystkim zaletą jest zadziwiająco realistyczne podejście do świata średniowiecznej Anglii i rycerstwa, a oprócz tego ciekawa atmosfera i dowcip.
